At the outset of World War II German U-Boats sank 259 ships—most within sight of shore—and the only thing between them and the worst maritime defeat in U.S. history was the Coast Guard’s Corsair Fleet. Civilian sailors offered up their yachts and volunteered to stop the Nazi onslaught in this hastily formed reserve force. This is the thrilling story of four men and their heroic efforts to confront the enemy. Two aging world-class sailors, a businessman with ties to the underworld, and a young Coast Guard petty officer overcome adversity and the clash of personalities to take on the most advanced weapon put to sea.

Hooligans Matthew R Walker 9781620030042 Books

Captain Matt Walker has spun a tremendous adventure story that grabs the reader from the first chapter and will not let go until the final page. This is a fun read while it startles you to think about the ability of the UBoats to patrol the East Coast of the United States. Character development by Walker is a major asset in this Historical Novel. I found myself aboard the ketch as they went to sea in search of the elusive German U Boats. I recommend this fine book for anybody with a love of the sea and who might be in search of a thrilling adventure tale!

Outstanding writing and a major treat.

Hooligans Matthew R Walker 9781620030042 Books Reviews

The Coast Guard is often the whipping boy of the Armed services, and is not thought of in the protection of the U.S. This book brings to the forefront the dedication and service to this country during WW2, and is a tribute to all that serve in the USCG. The author brings his personal insights and factual history of the Coast Guard and intertwines a fictional story into a Great Read.
I learned things I had no knowledge of regarding WWII, things that were never taught in American History in our classrooms. The characters were intriguing, I found myself sitting forward, trying to help them move. Couldn't put it down until early in the morning! Thanks Matthew. Loved it!
While this book is a work of fiction, it sheds light on a part of American history in which ordinary citizens took extraordinary risks to defend our homeland. This story represents a small piece of what makes America who we are.
Cool story
Once started this book was hard to put down until done. Character development was just right. Pace of action as well.
As a former Coast Guardsman, I have read many books about the Coast Guard. This one was quite entertaining and presented a time and place in history that we usually don't think about. It definitely was a "hooligan" crew aboard the yacht. I was pulling for them from the beginning.
Captain Walker's professional embrace of all things nautical provide for an exciting and sometimes breathtaking read on one aspect of World War II that many may know little to nothing about. Walker brings to life those who were known as Hooligans, volunteers in the United States Coast Guard's Corsair fleet who converted their beautiful private yachts into gray painted gun boats fitting them with machine guns and depth charge launchers. He artfully paints a picture of the drama involved, both professional and personal in the lives of the men and women of the day and their preparation to set sail and eventually life underway and the fears they encountere along the way. Walker's canvas involves men too old to join the fight against Nazi Germany in Europe but are desparate to participate in the war. Expert yachtmen and sailors, they set out to sea off the northeast coast of the United States in search of German U-Boats that are reeking havock by sinking coastal freighters along America's east coast. Both the joys and sacrifices of the lives of the brave yachtmen, seamen and their families come to life in Matthew Walker's book leaving me wanting to read more about the Corsair Fleet and their pivotal roll throughout the course of the war. Kudo's to you Matthew Walker for bringing this piece of American history to the surface so colorfully for all Americans to see.
